Energy Egypt’s first hybrid solar project to break ground next year By Pramod Kumar September 13, 2024, 5:26 AM Scatec The company will develop a 1GW solar power plant and 100MW battery storage project Norway’s renewable energy producer Scatec will begin work on Egypt’s first hybrid solar power and battery storage project in the first half of 2025. The company has signed a US dollar-denominated 25-year power purchase agreement with the state-run Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company for a 1GW solar power plant and 100MW battery storage project. Financial details of the contract were not disclosed. “This will be the first hybrid solar and battery project in Egypt,” Scatec CEO Terje Pilskog said. Work to finalise land lease agreements, financing and grid connection agreements is ongoing. Cairo is actively developing 7,150MW of renewable energy projects, divided into 3,450MW of wind energy and 3,700MW of solar power. In November the company partnered with Abu Dhabi-listed Fertiglobe, The Sovereign Fund of Egypt and Orascom Construction to develop, build, own and operate a 100MW green hydrogen production facility in Ain Sokhna in Egypt. Last month Egypt launched its National Low-Carbon Hydrogen Strategy, which has set a target to capture between 5 and 8 percent of the global tradeable hydrogen market by 2040, which would increase the country’s GDP by between $10 billion and $18 billion.
