Kuwait National Petroleum Company Overview

Kuwait National Petroleum Company (KNPC) is the state-owned national oil refining company of Kuwait.

It was established in October 1960, with shares owned by the Kuwait government and the private sector, and became fully government-owned in 1975.

KNPC handles oil refining, gas liquefaction and the distribution of petroleum goods within Kuwait, owning 61 petrol filling stations across the country.

The company exported petroleum products from its Shuaiba refinery from 1968 until it closed in 2017.

Today it owns the Mina Ahmadi refinery, originally built in 1958, and the Mina Abdullah refinery, originally built in 1949.

In 1980 KNPC was placed under the newly created government-owned Kuwait Petroleum Corporation (KPC), and now serves as serves as the KPC’s operational arm.

KNPC owns the Kuwait Aviation Fuel Supply Company (Kafco) and has a 60 percent stake in the Kuwait Aromatics Company (Karo).

It also operates five ports and facilities for shipping and exporting petroleum products.
