Wheat production in Oman surged by 229 percent to 7,119 tonnes during the harvest season of 2022-23.

The total cultivation area reached 6,359 acres, an increase of 160 percent over the previous season, state-run Oman News Agency reported, citing data from the ministry of agriculture, fisheries and water resources.

The number of wheat farmers also grew by 24 percent year on year.

Dhofar governorate took the lead in wheat production (5,940 tonnes or 83 percent of the total volume of production), followed by Al Dakhiliyah governorate (801 tonnes), Al Dhahirah governorate (249 tonnes) and Al Buraimi governorate (38 tonnes).

The ministry signed a memorandum of cooperation with the Oman Flour Mills to increase the purchase of locally produced wheat. The company received 5,000 tonnes of wheat in the 2022/2023 farming season.

In August 2023, the ministry of housing and urban planning signed 40 contracts in Dhofar to increase wheat production and improve food security projects, Muscat Daily newspaper reported.
