Abu Dhabi-based property developer Miral has awarded a contract to run Yas Bay waterfront on clean energy as part of achieving the Emirate’s goal of net zero emissions by 2050.

The company has signed an agreement with Emerge, a joint venture between the UAE’s Masdar and France’s EDF, to establish a 524-kilowatt peak (kWp) solar photovoltaic (PV) project on Yas Bay Waterfront, a dining, entertainment and leisure destination.

The project is anticipated to offset 450 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions per year, Miral said in a statement.

Nearly 920 solar modules will be installed at Yas Bay Waterfront to provide sustainable energy supply.

Emerge will oversee the project’s finance, design, procurement, construction, operations and maintenance of the solar modules for 30 years.

Jonathan Brown, chief portfolio officer at Miral, said the project will set a benchmark in supplying clean energy to power Yas Bay and further position Yas Island as a top global destination.

Yas Bay Waterfront collaboration markets the third such partnership between Miral and Emerge.

Miral in March opened Abu Dhabi’s largest solar rooftop project at Warner Bros. World Abu Dhabi. The green energy project included 16,000 solar modules across the theme park’s roof area of 36,000 sq m, producing nearly 40 percent of its annual energy demand and holding a 7-megawatt peak (MWp) capacity.

Miral and Emerge last year signed an agreement to deploy on-site solar energy systems at SeaWorld Yas Island, Abu Dhabi, with an 8.4 megawatts capacity.
